A focus on collaboration

Our team had the privilege of attending UN Open Source Week in New York this past month. It was an inspiring event that underscored the power of collaboration in tackling global challenges. The gathering brought together individuals from over 40 countries, who also represented a diverse spectrum from civil society and academia to government and the private sector. This diversity perfectly represents a core ethos of open source: that collaboration, inclusivity, and openness drive solutions forward.

The theme of collaboration kept coming up, and we left the event feeling inspired about the potential for open source to foster collaboration across public and private sectors, and within and between countries.

Breaking down boundaries

One of the keynote speakers–Dmitry Mariyasin of UNECE–articulated the critical need to break down silos in our approach to problem-solving. He urged, “We have to have more interoperability, inclusivity, and transparency in the systems we design today, as digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence are truly shaping the way we live.” All this isn’t just about sharing code or data. It’s about fundamentally changing how we think about developing solutions. It’s about recognizing that the most complex global issues, from digital resilience to public health crises, demand a collective intelligence that goes beyond traditional boundaries. As Mariyasin pointed out, “open source is not just a technical model…It’s a governance model.” It’s a way to make decisions and implement change. And, in the spirit of open source, all stakeholders should be able to take part in the solutions.

Carry the conversation forward

We’re energized by the collaborative spirit we saw. And we want to carry this spirit forward as we take part in the upcoming Digital Resilience Forum in Madrid this October. We want to do our part in creating a world where governments, private companies, civil society organizations, and individuals work together, openly sharing knowledge and resources to solve the pressing issues of our time. We believe this is not just aspirational—it’s achievable, and open source is showing us the way.

Let us know if you too would like to participate in the Digital Resilience Forum and maybe even want to help organize or sponsor it. The event will be on October 29 in Madrid, Spain.
