The State of Guardian in Eight Charts
Executive Sumary
This report focuses on the state of Guardian, an open source platform that leverages the Hedera public distributed ledger network to enable Digital Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV) to become a reality. By acting as the guardrails for the rulesets in carbon markets, emissions, accounting, and biodiversity, Hedera Guardian provides auditable, traceable, and reproducible records that document the process and lifecycle of environmental assets. All this reduces fraud in sustainability markets.
In the past year, Envision Blockchain Solutions –the project leader organization– has cut down its activity, but it continues to own Guardian’s development, contributing the majority of code and comment activity. In this timeframe, they were responsible for approximately 91% of commits and 36% of general comments in GitHub.
Other organizations like Hashgraph are slowly increasing their contributions, while the organizational diversity has consolidated into fewer, though more committed participating organizations.
The project has managed to keep up with the pull request backlog. It has been less successful with issues, only closing two-thirds of those created.
In conclusion, Guardian depends heavily on a single company that has been drastically reducing its activity. Bitergia recommends closely watching Envision Blockchain Solutions’ open source strategy to be aware of the direction the project takes.
The current network structure underscores Guardian’s reliance on a single organizational hub. Encouraging more distributed contributions and visible collaboration across partner organizations will be key to achieving long-term sustainability and reducing systemic risk.
